METU MATH 119 Midterm 1

Calculus with Analytic Geometry (ODTÜ) · We broke down the 14 Fall MT1s from 2010–2024 that we could find, problem by problem. Limits without L'Hôpital and implicit differentiation came up on 14 of 14, an Intermediate Value / Mean Value proof on 13. This year the exam is in October and the scope ends at 2.9: the ln, inverse-function and related rates problems on old papers aren't on this MT1.

Exam facts

From the 2026-1 MATH 119 syllabus. All sections take the same exam; check the ODTÜClass announcement for the exact rules and the duration.

DateSaturday, 24 October 2026, 11:00The duration isn't in the syllabus. The 2021–2024 papers were 90–100 minutes with 5–8 questions (2019 and earlier: 110–120 minutes).
ScopeAdams 1.2–1.5, 2.1–2.6, 2.8–2.9Limits, continuity, the ε-δ definition, derivatives and their rules, the chain rule, trigonometric derivatives, the Mean Value Theorem, implicit differentiation.
Weight25 of 100 pointsMT1 25, MT2 35, final 40, recitation quizzes 7, Pearson homework 3.
FormatWritten, “SHOW YOUR WORK”Derivative questions usually say “DO NOT SIMPLIFY”: don't waste time simplifying. Since 2022, L'Hôpital has been banned on the whole paper; since 2023, some parts have answer boxes.
NA rule: At METU the condition for the final is attendance, not a grade. If you don't attend at least 60% of the lectures and, separately, at least 60% of the recitations, you get an automatic NA.

What came up in the last 5 Fall MT1s

Each box is one exam (Fall 2019, 2021–2024; the 2020-21 online paper couldn't be found). Filled box: the topic came up in at least one part of that exam. Only topics in this year's MT1 scope are listed.

  • Limits without L'Hôpital: conjugates, sin x/x, squeeze, ±∞in 5 of the last 5
  • Proofs with the Intermediate Value / Mean Value Theorem / Rollein 4 of the last 5
  • Implicit differentiation: tangent, normal, horizontal tangentin 5 of the last 5
  • Recognizing a limit as a derivative (f′(a) of which f?)in 4 of the last 5
  • Derivative rules + chain rule (DO NOT SIMPLIFY)in 3 of the last 5
  • Piecewise functions: a, b for continuity / differentiabilityin 5 of the last 5
  • Proving a limit with the ε-δ definitionin 1 of the last 5
  • True/False + counterexamplein 1 of the last 5

the scope got narrower: ~30% of the points on old papers moved to MT2 this year.

What to expect this term

  • Limits without L'Hôpital, with many parts. On 14 of 14 exams, a question with 2–5 parts: conjugates, sin x / x, squeezing with a bounded trig factor, |x| = −x at −∞, one-sided cases where the answer is “the limit doesn't exist”. L'Hôpital (4.3) isn't in this MT1's scope.
  • Intermediate Value + Mean Value proofs. “Has exactly one solution”: the Intermediate Value Theorem for existence, f′ > 0 or Rolle for uniqueness. Proving an inequality with the Mean Value Theorem is common too.
  • Implicit differentiation. Tangent/normal line at a point, points with a horizontal tangent, where two tangents meet.
  • Piecewise functions. “Make it continuous and differentiable, find a and b”, or compute a one-sided derivative from the definition. On 5 of the last 5, and 13 of all 14.
  • ε-δ (1.5). Prove a limit from the definition for a linear function, or check an inequality for a given ε and δ. Rare: 4 of 14 exams, last in 2019. Cheap points.

MT1 in 3 days

If you have 3 days left, start with the topics that come up on every exam.

  1. Day 1: Limits + continuity + ε-δ (1.2–1.5). List the techniques that don't need L'Hôpital, and do the past limit parts at 5 minutes each. Then continuity of piecewise functions and one ε-δ proof.
  2. Day 2: Derivatives (2.1–2.6). The derivative from the definition, “this limit is the derivative of which f”, the rules and the chain rule. Be sure to do the (fg)′, (f∘g)′ questions given with a table.
  3. Day 3: Mean Value Theorem + implicit differentiation (2.8–2.9). Write out the proof patterns, then the tangent/normal problems. Last 2 hours: one MT1 start to finish, like a mock exam.

FAQ

When is the MATH 119 Midterm 1?

Saturday, 24 October 2026, at 11:00. The duration isn't in the syllabus; the 2021–2024 papers were 90–100 minutes (2019 and earlier: 110–120). Check this year's duration in the ODTÜClass announcement.

What topics are on MATH 119 MT1?

Adams 1.2–1.5 and 2.1–2.6, 2.8–2.9: limits, continuity, the ε-δ definition, derivatives and their rules, the chain rule, trigonometric derivatives, the Mean Value Theorem, implicit differentiation. Inverse functions, ln/exp and related rates come after MT1 this year.

How much is MT1 worth?

25 of the term's 100 points. MT2 is 35, the final 40, recitation quizzes 7 and Pearson homework 3 points.

What do I need to avoid an NA?

Attendance, not a grade: you need to attend at least 60% of the lectures and, separately, at least 60% of the recitations. Fall below either one and the NA is automatic.

Where are the past exams?

The 2010–2019 Fall MT1s and their official solutions are public in the course archive; later ones are officially on ODTÜClass (we reviewed the 2021–2024 papers through public previews of student uploads). The links on this page go straight to the official files.

Is this an official METU resource?

No. Vizekit is an independent study resource. The analysis and lessons are ours; for the official exams we only link.
